I knit a swatch yesterday in the Skye tweed on the way to work. It was pretty close to 4 inches square. I've never actually checked gauge before and I now know why a few things haven't fit right. I know, I know. Every pattern instructs to check gauge. Since I want the sweater to fit, I went ahead and did it. I'm bringing it to the first sweater class for inspection. I hope it passes.

If it does not pass what are the punishments? DO they issue a penalty like "No needles for 1 week" or tempt you with expensive yarns? Just curious?
The punishment is buying a new set of needles appropriately sized to obtain correct gauge.
Look at you taking classes like a good little student. Are you looking for a knitting degree? or are you going right for a masters? :)
Got a cute little bag out of my knitting and then decided to try my hand at increasing and decreasing. Go searching for videos online to see why I can't figure it out. Yikes! I'm knitting some freaky "combined" way that means my stitches are on the needles differently so I have to turn them before I dec or inc. damn! So now I'm learning to knit for the 3rd time. ugh! anyway, maybe a pic of my little bag in the next couple of days
good luck with the sweater!!!
oh yeah,
Have you "found" the yarn store we saw from the train?
Do you have Stitch n Bitch book? I thumbed through it on my last visit to yarn store. Had a few helpful things about basics that I hadn't seen before.
Forgot to look for yarn store online. Every time I'm by a window (which isn't often) it's a plexiglass one that's all scratched and you can't see out. boo to MBCR.
no to the book (as of yet) but found the videos here to be pretty handy http://www.knittinghelp.com/
I never used to to do the Gauge. But recent mistakes have proven it to be a valuable tool. I clear cut case of the 5 P's for me. GMaP
