I'm working on another pair of Cabled Fingerless Gloves. While doing the rounds of my usual knit blogs, I ran across a tutorial for cabling without a cable needle. WHAT?!?! You can do that??
Yes, you can and I'm living proof. I have been cabling sans awkward cable needle at home, on the commuter rail AND on the shaky green line! It can be done. Fabulous. Just fabulous.
I've also starting modifing patterns to meet my needs (I guess this is like moving to an orange belt in karate). For my first pair of Cabled Fingerless Gloves I followed the pattern exactly and I got two right handed gloves. From the pic on the pattern I don't think they cared... and I didn't really either. But after some consideration, I realized I could put the cable straight up the thumb, not to the right, making both gloves work for either hand.
I also realized that I do a M1 (make one) wrong. Whatever did I do before Knitty Gritty? My knitting knowledge would be vastly lacking.
Maybe I'll post a pic of the gloves in production later.

did you see the M1 on the magic hat episode? That's where I learned mine :) #3's hat is about 1/2 done. I can't wait to see how it looks in the end.
as for recreating the patterns just for you... good job! Now you're a designer! ;) Congrats!
