High Society

How have I never seen High Society (1956)?

Philadelphia Story is one of my favorite movies, so when my friend Terri blogged about High Society I immediately threw it in my Netflix queue. I watched it this morning and here's my take:

  • I have never seen a movie with either Grace Kelly or Louis Armstrong. I feel better now that i have. Oh, Louis. He's cute.
  • Grace Kelly is no Katharine Hepburn. I didn't care for Grace's acting. Seemed unnatural.
  • Bing Crosby just doesn't do it for me like Cary Grant does.
  • I LOVED that it was in color.
  • The songs weren't too cheesy.
  • I WANT the dress that Grace Kelly wears to the Bach Party. (I can't find a pic of it.)
  • I am now obsessed with the champagne glasses they use throughout the movie. I have been scouring ebay for similar ones.
Here's my favorite song. Of course it's Frank.

It's an okay movie but it will never replace The Philadelphia Story. I like it but I prefer the original. It's like watching Holiday Inn and then watching White Christmas. Both good movies but no one can out-suave Fred Astaire. Now I will have to get High Society and check out the dress and the glasses. You have piqued my curiosity.
Watched Bell, Book and Candle, again, a couple weeks ago. Jimmy Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Hermione Gingold, Elsa Lanchester, Ernie Kovacs and a cat named Pywacket. Kim Novak wears this stunning red velvet cape with red satin lining. I covet!!!!

If you loved her clothes in this one, rent Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart. There's a black and white dress that is stunning. And it's a fantastic movie, too.

I think this is the first time I ever heard Cole Porter's music described as not too cheesy. I must be getting old.

oh, good - you got to see it! I really like it. If you're talking about the dress at the party where she gets drunk and runs off with Mike here:

also, (gah, I'm bombarding you with comments!) that was the last film she made before she married Prince Rainier and that was her own engagement ring she wore.

have you seen the apartment? it was an accidental watch, as in "what do they have at this little casita for movies? oh, the apartment." it's not a movie for finding fashion, but it's old comedy.

loved loved loved philadelphia story. kh. sigh.
